Car Re-Registration
Having decided to import our British registered car to Spain, (Orihuela Costa, Costa Blanca) we thought we’d share our experiences with you. First, we’ll go through the basics of how we did it, and then we’ll explain how it should be done!
Our car is a Ford Focus, originally registered in Germany, but we bought it in the UK from a left-hand dealer as a left-hand drive vehicle, and the garage arranged to have it registered on British plates. Therefore our car conformed to Spanish requirements regarding headlights, reverse lights, etc. We also owned our car for more than 6 months which is required for private importation into Spain.
We suddenly realise we’ve got 10 working days to complete the importation of our car, if we want to do it within the 60 days allowed. (If you complete the transfer within 60 days of taking out residencia you are not liable for import tax – which can amount to thousands of Euros.)
After attending the ITV station in Torrevieja, our car passes its test.
We are then able to attend the British Consulate in Alicante to request a Baja Consular.
Then it’s off to our local SUMA office to pay our road tax.
Next, it’s the Hacienda office in Orihuela to collect the form needed for Trafico.
Then it’s off to Trafico in Alicante where we pay our registration fee, hand in our documents, and are then asked to return the following day to collect our paperwork.
This we did, and with paperwork in hand we were able to get our new number plates made up and fitted.
These are the basic steps, which do not reveal how frustrating the process was – 3 visits to Orihuela and 3 to Alicante - so we’d never do it again, and we highly recommend using someone who’s experienced in the process.
